Review: One True King – A bittersweet but satisfying conclusion to a magical journey

After five books of twists, turns, and captivating fairy tale magic, Soman Chainani delivers a fitting, if somewhat bittersweet, finale in One True King. This sixth and final installment of The School for Good and Evil series brings Sophie and Agatha’s journey to its dramatic conclusion, answering the burning question: who will reign supreme?

Chainani doesn’t shy away from the high stakes. The battle for Camelot, the fate of the Endless Woods, and the very definition of good and evil are all hanging in the balance. The narrative weaves together the threads of previous books masterfully, tying up loose ends while still delivering plenty of surprises. Familiar faces return, and their roles are expanded upon, giving depth and emotional resonance to their arcs. The author skillfully balances the epic scale of the conflict with intimate character moments, allowing us to connect with the characters’ emotional journeys even as the world around them crumbles and rebuilds.

While the story largely focuses on Sophie and Agatha, as expected, it also offers satisfying character arcs for other beloved characters, offering closure and a sense of finality to their storylines that feel both earned and deeply satisfying.

However, the book isn’t without its flaws. Some might find the pacing uneven at times, with certain plot points feeling rushed while others drag slightly. The sheer number of characters and interwoven storylines could be overwhelming for readers new to the series. Additionally, the conclusion, while narratively sound, might leave some readers wishing for a different resolution, particularly those heavily invested in certain character pairings.

Despite these minor drawbacks, One True King is a largely satisfying conclusion to a beloved series. Chainani’s signature wit and whimsical prose remain, creating a world that feels both fantastical and deeply personal. The final confrontation is thrilling, the emotional stakes are high, and the ultimate message about the nature of good and evil, and the complexities of power and leadership, remains poignant and relevant. It’s a book that will leave you pondering the choices made and the sacrifices endured, long after you turn the final page.

Overall Rating: 4 out of 5 stars. A fitting and emotional end to a captivating series, though not without its minor imperfections. Highly recommended for fans of the series, and a good starting point for those interested in a richly imagined and character-driven fantasy tale.
